REVISION HISTORY
══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
4.0
o Active world-wide shareware marketing resumed.
{Many various in-house improvements were made to DOSview and most of its
utilities while temporary pulled off the U.S. shareware market for an
exclusive foreign export program.}
o Quick Directory change function added (F9). (No more F9
pull-down menus.)
o Attempted to make editor keys more in line with standard
Windows editing keys (as much as possible).
o You may define in setup a multi-file editor (like DVE?) for
the Ctrl-F4 key (Shift-F1 V for setup). Then, you may
mark files in one or _both_ panels and automatically pull
them into your multi-file editor all at once (memory permit-
ing)! Neat, huh?
o The note file does not actual get saved when pressing F2
unless it has actually changed since the log into it. This
helps prevent extra notifications that it has changed and
that you need to review it.
o Fixed tree completely. Can now find bottom trailing
directories at bottom of tree. Max directories now 4000.
Max levels now 10 (or tree build will abort).
o Fixed a small problem that would not let your attrib files if
highlighting the parent directory '..' even if files were
marked.
o Fixed a problem where sometimes editing and saving a new file
ended up with a file attributed as readonly and hidden.
o A TODO file, for each user, has been implemented. Use ^T to
access this function (with an empty DOS command line).
o You can now print text files directly from the panels with
ShiftF7.
o The ~ defined DOS commands function now allows for command
comments that will be shown on the command pick list.
o Minor cosmetic changes.
o And many other small improvements.
2.0
o The Wipe/Ymove structure commands now allow you to leave the
actual structure in place, if you desire, while only
deleting/moving all files within the structure.
o The Xcopy/Ymove structure commands will now copy/move over an
existing directory structure, if desired. In this case, any
new directories and/or files will be added to the target
directory's structure.
o Copy commands and Move across drive commands now show the size
of the files being copied in the percent done window.
o An internal help screen is now available in case DOSview's
external help file (DV.HLP) is not available. This makes it
more convenient to grab-one-file-and-go (DV.EXE) when you
must work away from your normal DV setup.
o The DOSview executable may be renamed. If you do so, you must
also rename all supporting executables (.EXE files like DVE,
DVV, DVZ, etc) and the help file (.HLP). We recommend using
a two-letter DOSview file root name, like XX.EXE (and then
XX.HLP, XXV.EXE, XXE.EXE, XXZ.EXE, etc). All of the DOSview
support files (.INI, .TRE, etc) will be made using the new
root name.
o DOSview now returns better error reporting to you when you try
to run a command non-swapped and it can not be found (either
it is not in the path or it doesn't exist in the current
directory).
o DVEdit can now load subdirectory file specifications as well.
o DVEdit now has a "Go to DOS" command.
1.9b
o DOSview now requires each user to enter a user name for its
prompt and other internal uses when operating DOSview shared
on a network. Each user will be asked for this name the
first time they run DOSview on the network. This name is
still changeable under Setup.
1.9a
o Fixed a lockup loop caused from pressing CtrlAlt twice in a
row while invoking the screen saver.
o The DOS command history list is now saved and reloaded between
DOSview sessions (small history problem also fixed).
o Commands from the DOS command history list are now immediate
when selected. To edit a previous command, bring it to the
command line with ^E/^X instead.
o Up/down arrow indicators have been added to all pick lists.
o The Misc and Other Filter options now show the first defined
extension of each group for easier remembrance of what each
set holds.
1.9
o A powerful addition to the copy file function has been added
that lets you to copy files only when the source file is
newer than the respective target file or the respective
target file does not exist. Press CtrlEnter instead of
Enter when answering the copy file question.
o Just as CtrlEnter enters the current filename for you under
certain conditions in DOSview, ShiftEnter now does the same
thing except that it adds the full path of the filename.
o You can now invoke the screen saver immediately at any time by
pressing Ctrl and Alt at the same time. Also nearly any key
except Ctrl or Alt by themselves wakes up the screen saver.
o If you really know DOSview, you now may turn off the function
key line that is normally shown at the bottom of the panels
while in panel mode.
o The last directory made is now remembered for easy editing of
similar directory names made later.
o DOSview now properly rereads floppy statistics when changing
floppies with the Status screen visible.
1.8a
o The DOSview prompt now starts with 'WIN│' if you are running
from a Windows DOS box.
1.8
o A user-defined permanent DOS command list has been added.
Press '~' to access (and/or edit) this list.
o You can now show panel file names in uppercase instead of
lowercase if you wish (defined in Setup).
o Fixed a minor problem with long DOS command line commands.
o Fixed a problem with long file copy/move destination answers.
o Another general code cleanup was accomplished.
1.7b
o Fixed a small bug that did not allow changes to the defaulted
file color associations to remain active under certain
conditions.
1.7a
o The User Menu can now automatically edit files with the
internal editor. See the User Menu Editing help screen for
an explanation of this powerful feature.
o A new external utility, DVGet (a batch file utility), has been
added to the registered version's distribution package.
o A DVREADME.TXT file has been added to the distribution package
that delineates quick start procedures and other need-to-
know topics.
o A sample User Menu file is now part of the distribution
package.
1.7
o Function key labels are now shown even if only one panel is
visible (in shortened form).
o You can now setup DOSview to use a block cursor versus the
normal DOS line cursor (good for laptops).
o The internal editor now turns the DOS file archive attribute
to on when saving a file.
1.6c
o The Find File command now allows viewing and editing of files
listed in its pick list directly. After performing such an
action, the pick list will automatically return to the last
highlighted file.
1.6b
o Fixed a recently introduced Hot Key command function bug.
1.6a
o The Find File command now has an option to find only those
files containing a specific simple text pattern; this works
great for text or mostly-text files.
o Fixed a potential lockup bug in the command history function.
Also, all previous DOS commands may now be edited before
re-running them. The history list may now be accessed even
in DOS Mode (panels not showing).
1.6
o The User Menu format (CtrlF10) has changed with this version.
Old menu dividers (|) must be changed to ~. Also any ? or !
symbols that are to be interpreted for action by the menu
system must be placed within the actual DOS command and not
as part of the menu text. Edit your menu and press F1 for
explicit instructions. This change was necessary to allow
more flexible DOS commands from the User Menu System. This
change was made to accommodate many users' requests.
o The Hot Keys (CtrlShiftF1-F10) can now take advantage of the ?
and ! actions just as the new User Menu commands do.
o The Find File command can now find any valid DOS file
specification, like *.E?E, MY*.D?C, etc. It is also even
faster than before. Use ? to bring up a previous find list.
The Find Dir command is no longer available. Use the
directory tree to find a directory name.
o The Filter Panel function can now take one trailing wildcard
at the end of any filter extension definition, greatly
expanding the usefulness of this powerful function.
o A nasty setup bug in DVZip has been corrected: if you defined
a directory for your compressor program in setup and had not
placed a \ at the end of it, then DVZip could not find it.
1.5d
o The Filter Panel function has been greatly expanded to include
user-definable filter sets (in Setup).
o Some commands previously available in DOS Mode are now only
available in Panel Mode.
1.5c
o Last swap status has been added to the Status panel.
o Status, Viewer and Browse panels are now quicker and cause
less panel refreshing.
o The root directory's dir info file is now always shown on the
Status panel, if it exists, along with the local dir info
file.
1.5b
o Different drives can now use alternate color sets when any
portion of that drive is shown within a panel. Use Setup
to define drive colors.
o When building a directory tree, you now have the option of
skipping any previously defined ignored directories. This
can be useful if your tree is getting too large or it just
takes a long time to build.
o There is now an option to turn close integration of DOSview
utilities on or off. Integrating DVZip specifically takes a
lot of memory, which can be a big problem if you are not
swapping to XMS.
o A "Commonly Asked Questions - and Answers" file has been added
to DOSview's released file set - DVUSERS.DOC.
1.5a
o After a Find File command (^Z), you can reuse the last found
list of files by pressing ? instead of ^Z again.
o *.XXX and XXXXXXXX.* multiple moves now really move instead of
copying/deleting.
1.5
o DOSview now can be started with one or two starting path
designations for its panels. DV C: F:\UTILS, DV C F and
DV F:\APPS F:\DATA will all work if the paths are valid.
A single letter is the same as a letter and a colon here.
1.4c
o A network setup program, DVNSETUP.EXE, is now available for
supervisors wishing to setup DOSview properly on a network.
o A Shared Net Log feature (^N) is now available allowing
multiple DOSview users to track and update one central log
file between them. When the log is updated by another user,
you are notified right on your DOSview screen. Check the
documentation for details.
o The Filter Panel function has been expanded into three
separate choices; All, Executable and Custom.
o A Network Setup Section has been added to the Setup function.
o Another general code cleanup was accomplished.
o The Change Volume Label function has been removed to keep the
size down; use the DOS label command if needed.
1.4b
o A Browse Directories panel is finally available (CtrlF5).
o You can now elect to automatically save the current panel
states when quitting.
1.4a
o A new setup option allows you to exclude specified directories
from being searched by the Find File (^Z) command. \MAIL
may be a great choice under certain network environments.
1.4
o The Status window is now a "live" panel. Memory statistics
have also been updated. The Status panel may be saved as
a panel show default.
o DOSview now supports individual directory information files
which can be viewed with the Status panel. DV.DAT (primary)
and DIRINFO (secondary) are used.
o The '&' is no longer required/desired when entering external
programs. Simply enter the program's name (enter the full
path if the program is not in the DOS path). This change
was also made to DVZip.
o DOSview now automatically does a screen refresh after running
DVZip.
o An Unsorted choice has been added to panel sorting options.
o The user-defined menu option now supports both a main menu (=)
and a current directory local menu (Alt=). Additionally,
when on a network, you may define this local menu to be your
"own" main menu located in your private directory.
o Fixed a minor menu error.
1.3a
o Drive changes can now be forced to the root directory from
within the drive change pick list.
o DOSview now takes less than 4K when running DOS programs.
o DVView now allows for instant screen printing as well as
printing of defined blocks of text.
o Fixed various small anomalies.
1.3
o The Tree Mode can now collect a maximum of 4500 directories up
to 12 levels deep.
o The Tree Mode directory tree now shows when the last tree was
built (at the top of the tree).
o Fixed the non-operational AltF8 key (DOS command history).
o DVLog (a computer logger utility) has been added to the bonus
package.
1.2f
o DVZip now supports ZIP, LZH, ARJ and PAK compressed files (and
therefore DVLzh is no longer available). DVZip also knows
when it is being run from DOSview and moves to the left or
right to allow panel file comparisons.
o A general code cleanup was accomplished.
1.2e
o Minor fixes.
1.2d
o Menu now allows pointing to disabled items to view the help
associated with those items.
1.2c
o DOSview now has 3 color settings - 1=Mono, 2=Color, 3=B&W.
o Two Additional bonus utilities have been added: DVQuery (a
DOS-level input utility) and DVPost (a screen poster).
1.2b
o The external utilities DVMenu (an instant DOS menu utility),
DVCalc (a programmer's calculator), DVAchart (an ascii
chart), DVLzh (an LHA viewer), DVSecure (a computer security
program) and DVDo (a powerful batch utility) have all been
"readied" for use with the registered version of DOSview.
